Error Diffusion for Asymmetric Resolutions Output Planes

Traditional error diffusion algorithm has been generally proved as an effective method for digital image halftoning, but it cannot generate a visually pleasing output on asymmetric-resolution output planes where vertical and horizontal resolution is not equal. In this sketch, we designed an optimization process to search for the diffusion coefficients for such output planes. Integrated within this process, a one-dimensional minimization algorithm is also applied to the automatic obtaining of the optimal modulation strength of thresholds that plays a key role in removing visual anomalies in the mid-tones. The work presented in this sketch is an extension to previous contribution [Zhou and Fang, 2003]. Experiments showed that our method could generate parameters for high quality output on the asymmetric resolution output planes.
